Studio vs Outdoor Photography

Choosing Indoor or Outdoor Photography in Toronto

“Should we book a studio photography session or an outdoor one?” is something I get asked a lot as a Toronto photographer, especially during winter and spring,

With unpredictable weather and busy schedules, it’s completely normal to feel conflicted. The good news? Both options can result in beautiful images, the right choice depends on your family, your comfort level, and the type of photos you want to display in your home.

This guide will help you decide which option makes the most sense for you.

Studio Photography Sessions

Studio sessions are a popular choice during colder months in Toronto.

A studio photography session may be right for you if:

  • You value predictability. Toronto weather can be a bit unpredictable. Studio sessions remove weather concerns entirely, making them ideal for newborn photography, maternity sessions, and other time sensitive sessions.
  • Want one less thing to worry about. Studios allows for more consistent lighting. This is a big pro when the sun sets at 4pm in the winter. It’s also helpful if you don’t want to battle harsh sunlight mid-day.
  • If you want more control of your surroundings. In studio sessions have minimal distractions.
  • Your child (or any participant) thrives in calmer spaces. For children who are easily overstimulated or benefit from routine, studio sessions can often feel more relaxed.
  • You want an ‘at home’ lifestyle look but your home doesn’t look like an Ikea catalog.

Outdoor Photography Sessions

Outdoor sessions aren’t just for summer. Many love the unique look and feel that comes with outdoor photography in Toronto during cooler months. This approach is especially popular for lifestyle family photography and couples sessions.

Outdoor photography may be right for you if:

  • You love natural light and candid moments. If you’ve heard or are familiar with golden hour, then you know how dreamy the right lighting can make any moment.
  • You want a more relaxed, storytelling feel. Walking, playing, and movement often leads to authentic expressions. Outdoor photography tends to feel less posed and more documentary in style.
  • You enjoy seasonal backdrops. Toronto offers beautiful outdoor locations year-round. Seasonal photography sessions are offered to highlight some of the beauty of Ontario. From tulip, lavender, and sunflower fields to the Christmas tree farm, beaches, and wildflowers, it feels as if there is almost always a gorgeous backdrop to enjoy.
  • Your kids have lots of energy. Children often thrive outdoors, where they can move freely without feeling confined. This freedom often results in more natural smiles, play, and interaction.

In-home Photography Sessions

Photography sessions at home might not be even on your radar, but it might be a great fit under certain circumstances.

In-home photography may be right for you if:

  • You’re recovering from childbirth. Postpartum is hard. Newborn schedules are confusing. Have a photographer come to your home and capture newborn photos. It is so much easier and less stressful. I provide a newborn prep guide so you can have your home ready for our session without overdoing it. In other words, we shove stuff to the wall that won’t be in the photos, and we don’t judge.
  • You want to save money. If you don’t want to worry about the weather, but don’t want the added cost of a studio rental. An in home session is a great compromise.
  • There are mobility issues for any of the participants. Concerns about walking, parking, and accessibility are all valid. It can make more sense to set up a room in home rather than pushing our physical limitations.
  • You want things to be a little easier. Coordinating naptimes, wardrobes, schedules, and life can be overwhelming. If the idea of getting everyone ready and in the car on time sounds daunting, then bring the photographer to you!
  • You want your furry family members to participate. Cats and other pets might not be as easy to wrangle to a studio or outdoors as some dogs can be. If you want them in the frame, at home might be the best way!

What’s the best choice?

Many families assume the decision should be based on the time of year, but in reality, it’s more about the season of life you’re in right now..

There’s no one “correct” choice and that flexibility is what makes photography sessions personal.

You don’t have to figure it out on your own. As a Toronto photographer offering both studio, in-home, and outdoor sessions, I help clients choose the option that makes the most sense for them and reflects their vision.

If you unsure which option fits you best, feel free to reach out – even if you’re not ready to book yet.
