Best End of School Year Teacher Gifts

(That They Actually Want)

As a family photographer, I spend a lot of time chatting with parents. Right around the beginning of June, the same panic sets in for all of us. The school year is ending, and we realize we need to thank the incredible humans who taught our kids math and patience for the last nine months.
Finding the perfect teacher gifts can feel tricky. You want to show genuine appreciation without adding to their classroom clutter.

After talking to quite a few educator friends, I put together this realistic list of end of year teacher gifts they actually want to take home.

1. No More Mugs

Let us establish our baseline. Teachers love coffee and tea. They just do not need any more mugs.
A veteran teacher probably has a kitchen cabinet fighting for its life right now. Step away from the “World’s Best Teacher” ceramic cup and try one of these ideas instead.

2. Low Maintenance Plants

A small, potted plant brightens up a classroom or a living room. The key word here is low
maintenance. Think snake plants, ZZ plants, or a hardy pothos. You want to give them joy, not
another thing to try to keep alive.

3. Local Bakery or Coffee Shop Gift Cards

If you want to treat them, keep it consumable. A gift card to a fantastic local bakery or that cute
coffee shop near the school is absolute gold. They can grab a summer morning latte or a fancy
pastry on a Tuesday just because.

Some personal favorites that I could suggest if you’re in the East end of Toronto or aroud Ajax are:

4. Authentic Kid Art

Teachers choose their profession because they love kids (usually). A genuine, unprompted drawing, or a short story written by your child is a massive hit. It is highly personal and genuine.

5. The Quirky and Uniquely Them Gifts

Sometimes kids want to give their teacher a cool rock they found outside or a potato with googly eyes glued to it. Let them do it! Teachers appreciate the hilarious, weird things kids come up with. It brings a smile and makes for a great story later.

6. Movie Nights and Experiences

After a chaotic school year, teachers just want to relax. A gift card to the movies gives them a fun night out. Any experience gift, like mini golf passes or tickets to a local museum, says you want them to actually enjoy their summer break. If you’re looking to really splurge, gift them a mini beach photo session or gift certificate towards a photo session 😉.

7. Local Boutique Treasures

Instead of hitting up generic big box stores, pick up a gift card from a cool local shop. It supports
small businesses in your community and lets the teacher pick out a fancy candle, lotion, or home
accessory they actually love. Check out this shop, Cherry Bomb Mercantile, as to what a local boutique might look like.

8. A Meaningful, Handwritten Note

You would be surprised how rare this is. Take five minutes to write a sincere thank you card.
Mention a specific moment when they helped your child this year. Teachers keep these notes for
years and pull them out to read on the tough days.

9. The Ultimate Practical Restock

Restock of school supplies including markers and a box of tissues

Classroom supplies run completely dry by May. Teachers often buy tissues, markers, and glue out
of their own pockets. A care package of high quality dry erase markers and a few boxes of tissues is the love language of almost every grade school teacher.

I hope this gives you some inspiration for teacher gifts this year. If you’re a teacher, let me know if you’d approve and/or let me know what the best gift to receive is.
